The Pajama Men greeted their media-filled audience at Factory Theatre, Enmore, with a rip-snorting laugh-inducer of a show. Literally. Within the first five minutes of the show, as the two 30-ish-year old men gallavanted like horses onstage in the striped pyjamas of a young boy, your reviewer literally got the giggle-snorts. 'What was that?!' they intererupted the show asking me. 'We'll get to you later!' they promised, as the laughter of the night fell upon my mother-like laughing habits.In all seriousness (or as seriously as you want to get when it's comedy), the Pajama Men are, quite simply, the absolute shiz. The funniest comedy show I have seen in a long decade of seeing comedy, they truly deserve the Barry Award with which they were so happily bestowed at the Melbourne Comedy Festival in March.
Admittedly, the timing of this show could have been tighter. The 'Men - or should that be boys? - started the show already giggling at their own jokes and proceeded to improvise throughout the show to great theatrical effect. Keeping the gags fast and loose was mostly amusing, occasionally hilarity-inducing, but it did leave some of the longer skits with dead endings due to an over-stretching of their timing through too much making-up-on-the-spot. This was particularly unfortunate in the last punchline of the skit, which saw a long-running storyline of the show shot as a non-scripted gag was thrown in last-minute right at the end, ruining dramatic tension.
This aside, The Pajama Men still must be correctly described as the potential Seinfeld's of our time; they are simply that good. Go and see them, if you can. RIGHT NOW. I certainly know I would if I could again - and my tongue would click along for a ride through their stories of medieval and current history - yep, my tongue would click. You'll know when you go (just make sure you do)!
